Twelve months ago, an idea appeared in my mind like a seed dropped onto fertile soil. It lied dormant for several days, but like most seeds, it wanted to come to life. I shared the idea with a friend who surprisingly had had a similar thought. And so began Herb Club.
Herb Club is for everyone who loves herbs. Each month, a single herb would be chosen and talked about. It’s not essential to be knowledgeable about the herbs. It’s more important to be curious and to come together, to learn and discuss. And if you do know the herb and have a story to share, everyone is keen to hear about, how to use it and what happened after working with the herb?
Our first herb was Rose. Specifically Rosa canina. Folk name~ Dog Rose. A classic rambling and wildly beautiful rose, originating from China, through to the Middle East and onto Europe. Rosehip, the fruit body of Dog Rose, is used to make jams and syrups, wines and tea, amongst other kitchen recipes. The oil from the seeds are high in antioxidants and have been used in skin care products. The fruit is high in Vitamin C and carotenoids and is being studied for its use with arthritis and inflammatory issues.
And so you begin to get the idea. Herb Club. One herb, each month, so not to overwhelm, in an already jam packed life. We started simple and let the idea organically grow and find our community.
Towards the end of last year I led a workshop for teenagers on Plant Identification and Home Herbalism. It was a lot of fun and I realised how much I’d missed working with kids. In 2024, I have more plans for workshops and am hoping to grow Herb Club Online through this platform. It will have to organically grow though, like most of my visions!
I hope you’ll join our story.
